Definitely Richards and their variants

Every Richard I've ever known turns out to be a dick. This includes my literal Uncle Dick, who doesn't get invited to holidays anymore. My aunt's best friend's ex Rich the Math Teacher was creepy as hell. Other Richards I've known. They tend to be really shitty in general, flakes, guys who use people, or all three at once.

Hell, Richard is even a dick in The Lion In Winter.

I'm convinced at this point that the only Richards worth hanging out with are Ayoade and Dean Anderson.

Please prove me wrong, because it's a damn good name.

My 7th grade history teacher's first name was Richard & he was the kindest, most inspirational teacher I ever had.

What's the deal with upstate New York anyway

I mean, you're cool, and I had a friend from college who was from upstate New York who was really cool, and I follow a weird and frankly incredibly disproportionate number of people on Twitter from upstate New York who are cool

is it something like the cold forces you to either be intensely awesome or intensely terrible. or is upstate New York secretly awesome. or is this just a small sample size thing.

I'm from Syracuse, medium sized rust-belt city. But there are also a lot of really rural areas up here.

Upstate is distinctly unpretentious without being shitty or in the middle of nowhere. It's a nice place to live, but it isn't a destination.There's a relatively low cost of living (apparently my rent is really, really low compared to friends elsewhere). We have access to culture without thinking we're the epitome of it (see: New York City). There are also a lot of really good colleges up here.

And yeah, winter has to be part of it simply because we have to learn to deal with it. I only had a handful of snow days as a kid, whereas that amount of snow would shut down school completely most anywhere else. Snow is something you complain about and then push through. It doesn't keep you cooped up unless you're lazy.

But I'm not sure why any of this would make people up here shitty? The shittier people I've known were trying to leave. Maybe that's it? Some kind of undeserved inferiority complex?

Nah, there's no reason it should make people shitty, I was mostly just throwing out possible things

It is weird how places like that - I mean, I would say that upstate New York does not have a reputation of being a cool place to live, but I have found that situations like that can be much more rewarding than you would think. Low cost of living & access to culture is a really powerful combination.
