I'm not inherently against Game of Thrones, but I absolutely hate the "it's more ~historical~!" justification for grim-dark. Yes, people did bad things to one another in the medieval times but no, it wasn't always like that. Not all women were raped, people weren't regularly tortured. Grim dark fantasy is no more historically accurate than hero romances, they are opposite sides of the spectrum.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
yes, thank you! I'm so tired of this "dark is real" trend. It's the TV/book/movie equivalent of "brown is real" in video games.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Besides, that "it's realistic!!" justification lost all credibility the moment they had literally every female character on the show, including the wildings, not have a spec of body or pubic hair. I could maybe buy the no leg hair thing, but no pubes? Fuck off, show.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, I recall Natalia Tena (Osha) complaining about this very thing.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"Historical" isn't an intrinsically valuable quantity

frankly I don't think it's even particularly accurate as applied to GoT

of course write about what you want, that's just such a weird train of justifications

(Anonymous) 2015-11-20 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Just here to say, "Awwwwwwwww!" at all the cute puppies in that photo :).

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you could try watching it and make up your own mind about it. You don't even know if you like it or not, you're just getting buffeted back and forth by other people's opinions.

OP

I watched clips from it as part of a class about how violence is depicted in American film and television. It doesn't look like my cup of tea, to say the least.

I like Game of Thrones but the idea of a bunch of people using it as the gold standard for depicting rape is both hilarious and terrifying. What the fuuuuck

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
It really annoys me when people try to apply historical accuracy (or what they think is historical accuracy) to places that are goddamn fictional. Westeros doesn't exist! It's not even slightly constrained by historical accuracy

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, you not wanting a related pic kind of backfired on me. When I saw the rape warning followed by puppies I was a bit worried about what the relation might be.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Were they talking about the show Game of Thrones or about the books the show is based on? Because I'd say the treatment of rape is pretty different in those two.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Aiming for "historical accuracy" in a show that has dragons in it tho lol.....

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
And it's not even very historically accurate. It was generally believed in the Middle Ages that a woman couldn't get pregnant if she didn't orgasm. So husbands wanting kids had to make sure of that. :)

Why the funky monkey is anyone referring to GOT as historical? Chuckleheads need to take a history class and learn some real history. >:(

This is the article I most frequently see posted (on multiple sites) to defend GOT on historical grounds: http://www.theguardian.com/books/2015/jun/04/george-rr-martin-game-of-thrones-rape-reality-of-war

Be wary of that all-too-common type of GoT fan who gets a boner for how "historically accuarte" all the sexual violence and child brides are.

It was very obvious to me when I read the books that it had nothing to do with historical accuracy and everything to do with GRRM thinking pre-teens are sexy.

Wasn't there an interview with GRRM where he said he'd want to date or marry Dany because he thinks she's "hot"? I think this interview was done before the show came out too, so he had to have been referring to book Dany who starts off, like, 13 years old. Ew.

I think what bothers me most about the treatment of rape or sexual assault in GoT is how gendered it is. The men never even seem to feel the threat of rape, even at the Wall, or with Theon. I've only read the first book so maybe it's different in later books, but some people argue that GoT's depiction of rape is realistic and I just think "No, it isn't, men get assaulted too in real life."

(Anonymous) 2015-11-22 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
I know there's a male character who gets raped or sexually assaulted in one of the later books, but he's the only one I ever see mentioned whenever this topic comes up so it's still damn gendered.
