Well, you could try watching it and make up your own mind about it. You don't even know if you like it or not, you're just getting buffeted back and forth by other people's opinions.

I watched clips from it as part of a class about how violence is depicted in American film and television. It doesn't look like my cup of tea, to say the least.

the books are so much worse tbh. a lot of the characters are waaaaay more unlikable in the books...which is really saying something in some cases

If by "waaaay more unlikable" you mean morally grey and interesting as opposed to the black and white shells they are on the show, then yeah. I'll take a sentence of "so and so was raped" over minutes upon minutes of graphic rape filmed for the sake of titillation, thanks.
