Does anybody in this thread arguing about how autistic people need to "alleviate the strain they place on others by doing something about their condition" actually know anything about how autism works?

This is fucking depressing.

First off it's a developmental disorder so it's very difficult to completely cure altogether. It's not a switch , and it isn't like a singular troublesome program on the computer that you can just uninstall and delete. It's more akin to the whole operating system.

So before you go lecturing autistic people about how selfish they are and how they should want a cure because of how they burden others, maybe you should know a thing or two about it.

The anon who said that said they are on the spectrum.

Are you looking for a reason to be belligerent or do you just have poor reading comprehension?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 02:20 am (UTC)(link)
Unless there's another anon that I missed whose mentioned being on the spectrum, don't lie and say you're me.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Whoops, misread your post.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Technically they didn't say they were you. But I agree that they don't have the right to speak for you.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I caught that after I posted. I initially thought they said, "The anon who said they are on the spectrum," instead.

They're not really speaking for me. Though using this person said they're on the spectrum as a trump card rubs me a little the wrong way. While it's good to consider different perspectives, either I'm right or I'm not.

Oh yeah that bothered me too. Especially since they used to to shut down the other anon and claim they had poor reading comprehension or whatever or were stupid.

As if being on the spectrum automatically means a person "wins".

Two people with autism can speak up on this issue, have valid points but be very different.

Yeah, definitely. It's important to consider people's opinions who are actually on the spectrum more strongly than someone who has little experience with it, but there's enough variation in the community that taking just one person's thoughts and thinking it covers everyone else's will never be a productive conversation.

Or worse, when people dismiss those who don't have the popular opinion because so obviously faking their identity. I don't debate much so I haven't had it used on myself, but it seems to be an especially popular tactic lately.

Being on the spectrum doesn't give you a pass for ignorance nor does it mean you can say whatever you want about anybody else on the spectrum.

People talk about a cure like it's something easily done, and can just be plucked up and thrown away. Or that there are no effects it would have afterward, no adjustment period.

Why don't you think critically before accusing other people of having "poor reading comprehension".

I've researched neurological conditions like autism spectrum disorders. I've learned a little more about how they actually work and effect the brain in different ways.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 08:16 am (UTC)(link)
"doing something about" does not automatically mean "seek a total cure". Have you actually read the whole conversation?

And quit with the "autism 101". Many of us know far more about it than you ever will.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh that's a laugh.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-21 07:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Translation: I have no reply to your argument, so will pretend it is 'obviously' wrong.

Fail.
