They basically are.

The issue is some incredibly unaustralian people, perhaps devoid of mollusks in their life, call them potato scallops. This is unacceptable.

...but that doesn't look like what that means.

Yeah, those definitely aren't scalloped potatoes in the pic, and I've eaten a lot of scalloped potatoes.

I think the similarity is sliced potatoes. The deep-fried food is a slice of potato in batter. That dish you mention is a lot of sliced potatoes.

I also like scalloped potatoes, though I find them a bit of work.

I think they are using a different definition one usually associated with meat (a thin slice of meat, usually further flattened by pounding with a mallet or other implement), like veal scallops, that has more to do with the shape and size than anything else.

Nope. I call it a potato scallop. A potato cake to me involves grated potato. Or a sweet cake that has potato in the ingredients.

Last time I was in a fish and chip shop (only a week ago!) I saw they had the seafood labeled as "seafood scallops" to differentiate.

Also, no, I don't eat scallops (the seafood). The only seafood I eat is fish that once had both scales and fins... and nori.

And I love potato scallops.
