Eh. To be perfectly honest, I can understand how - in particular - the people being honored might be bothered by it. And frankly his influence is profoundly overstated especially if we're talking about fantasy rather than horror. It should have been Branch Cabell or something.

This. He contributed a lot more to the horror genre (and to some extent, sci-fi) than fantasy. Also, echoing the whole virulently racist thing (pretty sure he was a raging misogynist, too).

He had genuine mental issues that exacerbated his phobias. Being a racist and a sexist is bad bad bad but some people are just uninformed jerks and others, like Lovecraft, have deeper issues that can't be solved by education.

I respect his work but don't enjoy it, in part because he's overtly racist. I feel the backlash against the award was unnecessary, but I'm looking forward to what the new statue will look like.
