What the above posters said about most fantasy being the same damn medieval europe stuff with the same old tropes and magical devices.

(I really would LOVE to read or watch some fantasy books/series/movie that's in a setting that mimics medieval any-culture-other-than-western-europe though)

You mean, other than Okorafor, Jemisin, Lord, Beukes, Sulway, and Le Guin?

try the Grisha trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. Fantasy elements in a setting that's most like IMPERIAL RUSSIA \m/

I've solicited recs here for non-western fantasy (books) and I have a HUGE list, anon. I've got three down, about 12 to go. Of those three...2/3 were okay, one was shite.

They're out there, but with a smaller pool to start with, the likelihood of coming down with a severe case of loathing for a book is higher.

(and I will recommend the Seven Brothers trilogy until the day I die, it's fantastic)

Try Kate Elliott's Crossroads series!
