You know, I get this is hard to believe, but...sometimes people who are accused of being racist are actually racist. And it's okay to be critical of those people.

What is this ruining? How many fantasy authors are just besides themselves with grief that if they get a certain award it won't be a bust of Lovecraft anymore?

The award isn't going away. The acclaim for the award isn't going away. Lovecraft's works aren't going away. It's a minor change.

so we can never change things that are outright racist or bigoted because it might "ruin" that thing for someone else

should the confederate flag have been left hanging on government property too? taking it down sure did ruin some people's days...

Also, while sometimes there is merit to the 'it was of its time argument' - not to say that you consider it would be OK now, but that it was progressive or at least not actively awful for its day* - sometimes there really isn't. Not everyone in the same period thinks the same way, and Lovecraft held views that were repulsively racist in the terms of his own time.

* Case in point: use of the N-word in Huck Finn.
