Re: (TW Rape) On the subject of Boycotting dead authors...
(Anonymous) 2015-11-23 12:07 am (UTC)(link)Polanski disgusts me as a person. So does Woody Allen for the exact same reason. HP Lovecraft was a gross racist, Orson Scott Card is a gross homophobe, Ernest Hemingway was a gross sexist. Marion Zimmer Bradley was a fucking child molester. Picasso was a womanizing dick, Ezra Pound was a womanizing dick, Lord Byron was a womanizing dick, the list goes fucking on and on and on. I know authors/artists are only human and no one is perfect etc etc but there are levels, you know - some of these are just objectively, irredeemably shitty people. Some of them just have horrible opinions and some have done actual horrible things.
They also made art. Some people are good at separating the art from the artist, and some people aren't. I'm...not good at it, I gotta say. I avoided Polanski's work for years. In the end, I got too curious as to what it was about Rosemary's Baby that everyone was talking about, and I watched it. (I didn't pay for it, because I refuse.) I gave it a try, and I fucking loved it. I thought it was a goddamn masterpiece. It was so creepy, in so MANY different ways, just tapping into so many different kinds of fear and anxiety all at once, I was astounded. And bro, that pissed me off. Fuck that guy. I don't WANT to love his movie, because he's a piece of shit.
I still wrestle with this stuff. Maybe I'm being silly. But I know it's not just me who feels this way, so that makes me feel a bit better. But the thing is, I'm a big nerd, so I am COMPELLED to watch and read and look into all these things that sound interesting to me....I've investigated some stuff by like all those other artists. The level at which it bothers me changes according to how much I like the work. If I'm like "yeah, this is okay/good" then my mind can very easily fill in "but he's a fucking asshole" and I go about my day just fine because it's not like the work is so good that it could in other cases make me LOVE them. But if I go "I LOVE this thing", then it actually makes me feel bad inside that that sentence could be finished with "even though the thing was made by a disgusting human." I don't want to love the creation of a person who disgusts me.
It's not easy. If you would rather avoid the dilemma entirely, then don't watch the things. If you are pulled to try them, try to keep them separate in your mind. Separating art from the artist can be done. The question is if you're down to do it. I'm not telling myself that just because he made a really good movie one time, maybe he DIDN'T rape that 13 year old girl. I know he did it. Fuck Polanski. He can be a talented artist AND STILL be actual garbage, because both of those things are exactly what he is.
