He was acting in self-defense when he had the front and back entrances rigged (icy steps, hot front door knob).

Everything else was excess, and meant to piss off the thieves. Hell, he didn't even LOCK the back door (one guy tried to use the crowbar and then realized the handle turned freely), and left one of the side windows open. And then he kept encouraging them to chase after him. If he was REALLY concerned about defense, he would have closed and locked EVERYTHING, and called the police just as the thieves showed up. Still armed, yes, just in case, but not looking for an excuse to fuck someone up.

For the record, I don't fully blame Kevin for being a dumb kid. I think he reacted in this manner because of a shitty older brother who basically taught him that if you're big, you can push around the little guy and get away with it, and of two stupid parents who couldn't be bothered to protect their younger son or even validate the shit he has to put up with from Buzz. Or that useless asshole Uncle Frank. If I were Kevin, I probably wouldn't place a lot of trust in adults either.
