Our shortage of livable land and stupid mining companies who want to destroy all our decent farming areas.

Oh go away. We have 4000 people in my small little hometown and hardly even see them. There's always some more room. The adjacent countries to Syria right now harbour almost half the population of Syria and *you're* full? How many did you take in? 10K?

I have no idea - of both how full we are, and how many we have taken yet.

I only say that I get an impression a lot of people in other countries look at Australia and only see how big it is n a whole and not really understand that we have a hell of a lot of land that is totally unlivable. Australia cannot support hundreds of millions of people, like the USA can, we're pretty close to our limit at 30 million, because most of the damn continent is vast swathes of desert with little to no water.
Coal seam gas mining isn't help either, because it is cutting down the thin rim of livable land that exists.

But Australia did promise to take refugees. Exactly what happens with that is another issue though.

I'm mostly taking issue with above anon saying your Continent is full, but since you continued her argument of "we don't have the room"... this argument has been used for ages to justify Australia's elitist immigration policies. Just as a little reference point: sydney is pretty densely populated wouldn't you say? For a city in australia... now, my little town does only have 2/3 of its density but the next bigger one has about 200 people more/square km
I'd really like to see the population density relative to the in habitable space. Cause 30 million is just... cute.
