"I hate teenagers!"

(Anonymous) 2015-11-24 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I find it weird that if you're like, "I hate kids," everyone clutches pearls and assumes you're horrible or can't understand children. Whereas if someone says they hate teenagers or says they can't stand them, it's understood that by teenagers you mean the average teen and there's an accepted norm for people of that age due to biology, hormones kicking in, et cetera. Fsr this doesn't apply the same way to kids because Think of the Children Precious Angels that Don't Count as a Stage of Life, I suppose?

It's a strange double standard, anyway.

It's a very weird double standard. I used to volunteer at the library and at a food bank when I was in high school. At the food bank, I had an old lady say that she hated teenagers because all they did was smoke pot and destroy mailboxes and none of them would ever amount to anything. I was sixteen and putting together a box of food for her to take home. I wasn't a very snarky teen, but I couldn't help asking, "So you never amounted to anything? 'Cause, you know, you were a teenager once too, right?" The look on her face was priceless and she took her box without even saying thank you, muttering something like, "Rude kids these days".

I've heard lots of people say they hate teenagers or they're good for nothing but that's somehow socially acceptable, and hating kids is not. It's weird.

I don't really care if people want to hate based on age, I do think age groups are groups that tend to have certain common traits with each other, but either it's both acceptable or both not, I don't like the double standard.

Weird, because I feel like more and more, if you say you hate kids everyone around chimes in "OMG I HATE KIDS TOO!" Granted, that might be just among a certain subset--youngish internet types (see: this thread). But I think context and social group are important here.
