I'm not much in the fandom, but I feel like that's... like... objectively, textually true?

Both are monsters, but try getting a Spikista to see that. And as far as I am concerned "souled" Spike is still a self-centered immature douche.

This is definitely true, but there's an extra layer of cruelty to Angelus' behavior that makes him just a little bit worse.

(And tangentially, because why not rant about this now: the curse was unfathomably stupid. Why in the world would you build in that kind of loophole? Why would you make it that easy for him to lose his soul again?)

It's the kind of thing I'm completely fine with because it's stupid in a way that's incredibly gothic. Genre conventions, basically.

Not unlike all the retconning around Slayer origins. Suddenly it's about old men oppressing young women, not young women with superpowers doing it for themselves? Ohhkay then.

I just couldn't suspend my disbelief for it. And it made me hate all the brooding and whining that much more.

Spike is a douche...but, Angelus is well, actually cruel. And enjoys it.

And let's remember it was Spike's choice to get a soul in the end. Angelus would never, ever do that.

Spike is more like the villain who talks the talk and walks the walk, but when it comes down to it, his bark is bigger than his bite. Angelus is the kind who would skin our children alive in front of you for the lulz.

Spike had a speech about that, as I recall. That vampires say "I'm gonna destroy the world," when in reality most of them like the world and Angelus is one of the few who might actually destroy it.

I'll admit I'm massively biased, but I'd almost go as far to say that soulless!Spike was a lot closer to ensouled Angel than he was to Angelus. Granted, for a while most of that was the Initiative cip, but still.

Agreed. And also, the fact that soullless!Spike actively tried to change and chose to take on a soul. It was forced on Angelus. So while Spike was evil and not a good person, Angelus was so much worse.

Angelus was far, far worse but I hate that this is the argument that people use to justify Spuffy. Spike wasn't nailing puppies to walls but he was still a terrible fucking man(pire). Poor Buffy. Just about everyone in her life is awful. I need more Buffy / Cordy.

Oh, I agree. Being better than Angelus doesn't make him good.

I really hate Cordy. Honestly I'm fine with Buffy being on her own. Willow is awesome, but I'm too into Willow/Tara or Willow/Oz to want her with Buffy.

I hated that she died. From a narrative standpoint, it was a fantastic death, but I really liked her, and she and Giles were so sweet.

Totally agree. It was a perfect tragic episode, but I wanted Giles & Jenny to be happy and cute together for ever.

Oh, well, that's totally fair.
