I actually tried to read an explanation and just could not follow it. And then I didn't care.

tl;dr

* Elections were held for 2 seats on the board. Six people ran, and the two rightful winners will take their seats on December 1st.
* But! There was also a 3rd empty seat, I believe because somebody ended their term early. That situation apparently means the rules are slightly different, so rather than include that seat in the elections the board members chose to fill it by directly appointing someone instead.
* Straight after the elections were over - but before the newbie board members were officially in place and able to vote - the current board voted to appoint the person who came in stone-cold last in the election (by a long way) to that 3rd seat.
* Everybody not on the board collectively went “WTF??!!!”
* Entire current board flounced, and will be gone on 15th December, leaving the two newbies to do all their jobs with only half the usual “former board members hang around to show them the ropes” overlap time.

[different commenter]…Also, the board member appointed to the seat was allowed to vote for herself to be appointed to the seat… And the chair of the meeting asked about conflicts of interest and the board member who was voting for herself didn’t speak up.

... that sounds a lot like what LJ users were chose back in... 2004 or whenever LJ was originally sold to Six Apart.

I don't know how close the parallels are, nor does this actually affect me (I have an Ao3 account but have since grown a little bored with it), just saying... things always change with new people. Always. I learned that with LJ. "This is actually a good thing!" Nope.

I always forget the OTW runs Ao3.

I never got the OTW. Didn't they want to make fanfiction legal or something?

They hold massive fundraisers very frequently, and apparently had no planned budget, so someone was making money

I have no idea what's going on, I just hope AO3 sticks around because I don't know where else I'd go for fic. (Tumblr is awful for fic-reading, and while I don't hate fanfiction.net, I much prefer AO3's search.)

I like fanfiction.net's search more as a reader, but as a writer, I vastly prefer AO3 because I can post even my most questionable id-fic, and they won't take it down, unlike all the other sites that have rules and regulations out the wazzo.

If you want tons of results then ao3 is the way to go, if you want a list of things you actually want to read without a load of OC-centric bullshit or crossovers with other series, then The Pit is the way to go. It just depends how discerning you want to be. AO3 definitely gives you the 90% though.
