For Bujold -- Cordelia's Honor (which is an omnibus of Shards of Honor and Barrayar) is more of a prequel. They're amazing books, and the latest book is supposed to be another book about Cordelia. But, the main series is about her son, and you could start with Warrior's Apprentice, then swing back around later, if you wanted. The only thing you'd lose is that some of the backstory for the main series is on-screen in the prequels. If you don't want to risk getting attached to the characters as main characters (they do show up a fair bit in the main series but not as POV characters), then yeah, just start with Warrior's Apprentice and go read CH after you've gone through the main series. :)

Yeah, I definitely agree with this! I love Cordelia and her books, but Miles is my favorite, and I'm glad most of the series is about him. I started with Warrior's Apprentice and was hooked immediately. :)

This was going to be my suggestion too. It's a shame to miss out on the Vorkosigan saga just because the first book is a prequel about Cordelia.
I'm excited that there will be another book about her, though. I was a little bummed at how... perfect? she ended up being in the later Miles books. I get that it's just Miles' perception, but I want to see her more realized as a character once again.

Everything I've read says it was written first. That's not really a prequel, then. - OP

You're half right. Shards was her first book; Barrayar was written much later, after the main Vorkosigan series took off and people wanted her to go into more detail about what had actually happened to Miles. So, that one was definitely written in order to make some of the things that happened between Shards and Warrior's Apprentice make sense, which is pretty much a prequel.
