I don't know how much of what you're saying applies to Dune. Dune Messiah still has mostly the same main characters as Dune, but it's several years later, after Paul Atreides has solidified his position as Emperor. Children of Dune may be a bit more of a disconnect, because the main character is Leto Atreides, but several characters from the previous book are still present as well. From what I am aware of, the book that most fits your description is probably God Emperor of Dune since it's set thousands of years later and the only remaining character from CoD is Leto, and in that time he's changed a lot.

But really, it's your choice, I just say you can probably risk DM and CoD.
