"Ahaha, well, you can see that I'm out of date regarding the fandom XD I was only ever in it during season 1 - so I guess I have an inflated view of what DateSana was like. I don't really care one way or another, though. Like you, I don't really ship them. "

Yeah, DateSana is sort of like...I don't want to call it a "joke ship" because that's not the right term at all, but it's obvious that DateSana subtext is more along the lines of Japanese "fratboy"-esque humour in how they present the rivalry between those two, where there is actually some serious subtext for other couples. It's actually not nearly as cutesy or pronounced in the source games. At one point an aggravated, frustrated Masamune swings his katana fully intending to behead Yukimura after knocking Sasuke out of the way when he tries to protect Yukimura. Yukimura is slumped on the ground and sobbing and not trying to defend himself at all (Yukimura was effed up emotionally because of Shingen being on death's door, and he didn't have his heart in the fight at all). Kojuurou stops the katana with his hand and basically gives Masamune a verbal reprimand about being dishonorable and shit, but the whole scene is kinda fucked up (it's played off a lot in Judge End with some hallucinating of Mitsunari in Yukimura's place that doesn't happen in the game, Masamune from the game is definitely more focused and violent on killing Yukimura, he's taking all of his frustration out on him and purposely tries to kill him when he's already down and out...and then it turns into this emotional heart-on-your-sleeve scene between Kojuurou and Masamune lol) and I guess I never even had that watered-down version of their rivalry with the more joking tone of the first and second seasons that some people latched onto (the third season, Judge End gets...a lot darker, I was really surprised at the tone change) so I came into the anime fandom with a sort of "wtf is everybody shipping this for??" vibe lol.

"Well, wasn't there a theory that irl Kenshin was actually a woman? So if you go by that, even if Kenshin is into Kasuga, it would still be gay :P" <---There's some historical conjecture, yes. :) It's actually really interesting. It's very obviously not true, and no credible historians would say it's a theory that holds much water, but Kenshin was indeed such a beautiful man that he was mistaken for a woman. The theory gained popularity after they realized that the historian who recorded Kenshin's death stated he died of "uterine bleeding" lol. In reality it was most likely cirrhosis of the liver with internal bleeding in the stomach. Kenshin was a well known lush, he loved his alcohol. Sengoku Basara decided to play around with the whole gender thing by designing SB!Kenshin after the Takarazuka Review, an all-female review who dress in both male and female roles and were often known for their convincing male roles. SB!Kenshin is physically male, but he's voiced by a female voice actress in the anime, and his lean, feminine looks are based off of the ladies in male roles mentioned above. :)

"I haven't actually watched Judge End yet, and you're reminding me I need to. I watched the first two seasons with a very good friend of mine, and we were going to watch Judge End together, too - but then life happened, and more life happened... I guess I was still waiting for him, even though at this point it doesn't seem like we're going to get to it together, since we're on different continents. You make me want to go watch it, though!"

Did you ever watch the movie? I would suggest watching that beforehand if you haven't. It kind of introduces you to characters like Yoshitsugu a little more (plus it's a good movie). Judge End was really good, I definitely enjoyed it (especially for spoilery Yoshitsugu related reasons, he was treated much better in Judge End and since he's one of my favourite villains I'm super happy about that), but I can't help but enjoy the game it was based on better. They cut out a LOT of Kojuurou/Masamune bonding moments. :X Like during the whole DateSana fight scene the actual scene only makes sense with Kojuurou's emotional speech in there, but they cut the entirety of it out and Kojuurou just comes across brusque instead of the desperate-yet-still-noble pleading he does when appealing to Masamune's emotions in the game. And they remixed this scene (https://youtu.be/q0OgjShqSW0 skip to 10:04 to start the scene), which...they actually did a really amazing job with this part in Judge End and made it even more shippy where Masamune comes right out and says the thanks that he's implying in the game, but holy shit I have a soft spot scene as is with Masamune's sly little sideways glance back at Kojuurou and Kojuurou knowing exactly what Masamune is trying to imply and then Masamune gets all embarrassed over being emotional and tries to brush it off lol.

As for your friend and yourself, maybe you two could stream it together? :) Or make a Skype night out of it?
