We're winning (celebrate your victories thread)
(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 12:13 am (UTC)(link)Re: We're winning (celebrate your victories thread)
(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 12:14 am (UTC)(link)In print media alone we have stopped playboy from doing nudes, followed by the closure of the lad's mag industry with Zoo, Nuts, FHM going out of business.
In TV now have a 2 superhero shows about women and we have even more in the pipline. And holy shit, Jessica Jones! We have managed to get a TV show about a female superhero, with a heavy enphsis on rape and it has with zero titilation, zero fanservice, and basically zero gratuitous rape. It's a show about a comic book superheroine with an accetable bustsize dealing with rape trauma, and doing it respectfully! It's a show from and for the womans perspective. Had you asked me in 2014 if this was somthing any entertainment industry was capable of I'd have laughed in your face. Had you told me it was going to be a marvel comics story I'd have had you committed.
Films, Just take a look at films! Nothing much to report, but we have female lead superhero films coming down the pipline! Jennifer Lawrence is fighting the good fight in everything she does and is winning! There is no stopping her! And on the subject of things that absolutly will not stop, The new terminator, while admittedly trash, is back to focusing on the actual hero of the series and not her douchbag son. Sure it's not perfect, they still felt the need to include Arnold and the boring idoit guy, and there was some unnecessary nudity, and the plot was... whatever... Point is the focus is back where it belongs. Celebrate the good!
And games! after last years Gamergate shitshow how could anyone have seen the strides we'd make! Assassins creed has the fist female protagonist in a main game, and sure we could focus on the fact that the guy is still the main main character, but we must not forget to celebrate every inch of ground we gain. The new tomb raider game has Lara Croft with a healthy realistic bust, that is actually hidden behind some clothes. Appropriate (in terms or weather / activity practicalities and modern sensibilties) clothes for the fist time in the 20 some years of the franchise. And now even Japan, Fucking Japanese Game developers, Even they are getting the message. Read this bit of beautiful news I found today: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/dead-or-alive-xtreme-3-wont-ship-worldwide-due-to-/1100-6432590/ Sure, we could focus on how they're still making this trash, but they're atleast keeping in in their own country. They've stepped back. We can take some heart in that and use it to keep pushing. The more steps back they have to make the closer we are to stopping this shit from happening. Finally Undertale. If you're sitting here thinking "Huh? What's that?" stop screw about, go on steam, and buy that shit!
So honestly, it's true, there is so much more to do and there always will be, but please don't ever forget that we are, little by little, winning.

Victories are victories.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 12:26 am (UTC)(link)and tomb raider? it would be great if they hadn't de-queered her. the 2013 game and their tie-in comics were much better. especially the comics. leave it to gail simone to have the iron-clad pussy needed to make a character that has only existed to be nothing but catnipp to horny boys into a strong queer-positive icon.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 12:39 am (UTC)(link)Right, because victimised women have to be /nice/ about it.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 12:46 am (UTC)(link)I mean, you people who complain about big-breasted women know you're the other side of the same coin, right? You're shaming us for something we can't help and saying if we show up in anything we MUST only be there for titilation. You're no better than people who call big-breasted girls sluts for no reason than that they have big boobs.

It was never the intention to create some kind of 'page 3' girl to star in Tomb Raider. The idea was to create a female character who was a heroine, you know, cool, collected, in control, that sort of thing. The problem with those other games is that the female characters are actually there for purely exploitative purposes. I know you could argue that Lara with her comic book style over-the top figure is exploitative, but I don't agree. I think it's ridiculous to say that portraying stylised people is degrading.
Re: We're winning (celebrate your victories thread)
(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 04:20 am (UTC)(link)And even so, the whole idea that women in media have to have small boobs to be "acceptable" and not "creepy" or overly sexualized IS a judgment of real women who are busty. At the very least, it says there's something wrong and sexist with characters who look like us, which let me tell you, is not a good message to send to ANYONE, and I think it's fucking bullshit to claim feminism while saying a certain group of women shouldn't get characters who look like them simply because those characters are "too sexy."

Sure, not as big or as cringe-worthy as your "victories" but hey.
