He reacted like that because he was a romantic and more inexperienced than her, I guess. He was too naïve to understand why she was doing what she did.

Granted it's been a long time since I watched the movie... but I remember him being really innocent and overly idealistic whereas Satine was more jaded and realistic. I wouldn't expect him to handle what she does very well, especially since he thought the feelings were mutual and didn't understand her whole motives.

It just seemed so ridiculous after everything that came before. But, as another commenter pointed out, it can be hard to be logical in the moment, even when you have experience.

One thing I will say: IIRC, the feelings were mutual. It's just that her being in love with him didn't change her immediate situation, or the fact that she had to deal with it in order to survive.
