And it seems to me that most of the exceptions that people raised - Kirk/Spock, Holmes/Watson, etc. - tend to be rooted in much older fandoms. So I'm wondering if it's a little more accurate to say that modern fandom prefers shipping the rivals.
I know that back in my BTVS days, I was surprised that Spike/Xander even existed, because the characters loathed each other. And yet, the more I looked at other fandoms, the more I saw of people really going after that love-to-hate dynamic, such as Harry/Draco and Harry/Snape.
