Ships you liked with romantic storylines you didn't

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes, a show will have a really great relationship between two great characters, who really suit each other and have lots of chemistry and are very endearing and interesting...but the show will handle the romantic story-arc regarding the characters' relationship really poorly. It drags on too long, or it's cliched, or it's repetitive, or it has stupid misunderstandings or contrived obstacles or some such shit.

Sometimes this ruins the couple, but other times, the couple is still great, just that the storyline that affects their relationship kind of sucks.

Any examples that come to mind?

Everything about them should've clicked for me and just DIDN'T.

Yes! I loved the idea of them but I didn't like them in canon and ended up shipping her with Anders.

Buffy/Spike. I like the ship in theory (because two great characters with an interesting dynamic), but was mostly unimpressed with how it was executed in canon.

I shipped Harry/Ginny until they started getting together and I was kind of disappointed in how it played out.

Harry/Ginny was totally amazing in OotP. It had such logical psychological reasoning behind it (them understanding each other and being able to relate to each other in ways that their closest friends and family never would due to their experiences) and such fantastic understated scenes (like the one where they're eating Easter chocolate in the library). And their closer relationship and Ginny's character development creeping up on them so slowly and being so heavy on showing without telling that Harry doesn't even notice things like "heyyyy wait she's not all shy around me anymore?" until months into the book.

Then HBP came along and it never mentioned all the unique things that made them connect like Riddle etc, and was all tell, no show, and super generic. Sigh.

Mary/Matthew from Downton Abbey. All the contrived and forced drama after they got married was really stupid, especially in comparison to the seriousness of the drama they went through beforehand.

Naru/Hina. It was cute and I shipped it on and off since the timeskip in the manga and was happy when it looked like it was going to be canon. Except, instead of any real build-up, we got a completely off-screen get-together/romance/marriage, and then a movie I was completely disgusted by.

That whole bit about how Naruto couldn't possibly know his true feelings and decide who he loved; that it was decided by Hinata when she fell in love with him, just like Sasuke was helpless but to marry Sakura because she fell in love with him as a child. From what was shown in cannon Naruto and Sasuke never developed real feelings for either woman. It completely soured both ships for me.

Same for me and I absolutely adored it before they hooked up.

Thomas/Sybil from Downton Abbey. Like, seriously, what the hell was that and what happened to Sybil in season 3.

Mulder & Scully. I ship them with everything I've got but their actualized romance has always been very weak. Shippy moments? Very strong. Actual ship? Weak sauce.

Yup. So disappointing, especially after all that build-up.

Omg, this is the definitive answer to this question, for me. They are my favorite ship of all time, but I completely ignore all canon after season 6 because their relationship changed in such weird nonsensical ways. I also ignore "The Field Where I Died" in season 6, because Scully not being Mulder's soulmate is bullshit.

I read so much fanfic where their relationship was handled well that I often forget the truth of how badly it was handled in the show. But yeah, I completely agree. And it was a big part (though far from the only part) of what made the later seasons suck so much.

The end of Kim Possible. Talk about a shoehorned romance. Also, way to ruin one of the best hetero platonic friendships of all time.

Jane/Lisbon.

I don't hate the love story-line because it doesn't feel completely over-powering to the show but at the same time I never felt like they loved each other as anything other than friends and I liked it that way(I may have shipped it a bit and read some fic but I never wanted it to be canon). It could be much worse imo but I kind of rather they'd just not bothered with it.

Bruce/Natasha.

No really, I could have bought it, if it was written correctly.

I felt like I was watching some bodysnatchers interact instead.

This is my feelings on Harry/Ginny. I like the idea of the ship, and there are fics that made it work well for me. But I hated the canon version.

Same with Remus/Tonks. I shipped them before they were canon, and there are some great fics out there. I didn't hate the canon version quite as much as some of the others, but it really wasn't very good.

Really, I just don't like the way JKR wrote romance for the most part. I love those books a lot, but romance was not their strong suit.
