Are you rather young? The secret reads like you think that media has made the shift to disaster, doom, and gloom, and there will never be another portrayal of a happy future. Trust me, it'll come back around again. Just be patient.

It has been over ten years since Battlestar Galactica brought grimdark back. We're tired of waiting.

9/11 brought grimdark 'entertainment' to the forefront. I don't think we'll see a 'happier' future until terrorism is extinguished or we're all killed by all the nuclear powers setting the bombs off.

Yeah, because nothing grim happened during the times Star Trek was created. Except for the Cold War and the heated Civil Rights movements.

The main difference between then and now was the politicians then still got mileage out of encouraging us to be better and to work for a better and more just world (they were only saying that to screw with the Soviets, of course) and to strive for ideals. These days it plays better in the media for conservatives to call for the justification of being evil and surrendering to despair. Trying to be better, working for ideals is just too much like hard work for us lazy assholes. Better and easier to run down anyone who thinks we can do the right thing.
