I don't wish that dystopias disappeared completely, but I do wish there was some more variety. I feel like GotG is the most recent space movie I can remember that wasn't completely everything-is-terrible, though it wasn't exactly a utopia, either.

+1 I like a little dystopia here and there but the problem comes when that is ALL we have for sci fi.

I also like sci fi with a bit of a sense of humor, it doesn't even have to be idealistic but the trend of dark sci fi taking itself too seriously got to be too much.

But more Star Trek would be good too (hopefully the new series will be good.)

Same here. I just don't care for dystopian fiction, which means a lot of the more recent SF media isn't really my cup of tea. More variety would be nice!

Yup. I'm sick to the back teeth of grimdark stuff.

I feel you, OP. I like dystopias, but I also like more positive series. I'd say Doctor Who is actually a pretty good example of something more positive along with Trek and Babylon 5.

I agree. I miss cheerful, bright, wondrous space adventures. There's too much 'ALIENS CAME DOWN AND ERASED HUMANITY AND NOW WE MUST FIGHT BACK'

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A return to The Future! Yay! would make a welcome change , yes.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-26 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sometimes dystopias are good, I wouldn't want them 100% gone. But yeah I get really sick of a dozen dystopias popping up every year when there's so many more cool and interesting possibilities for various awesome optimistic fictional futures, and also, so many dystopias are so fucking generic and same-y.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Are you rather young? The secret reads like you think that media has made the shift to disaster, doom, and gloom, and there will never be another portrayal of a happy future. Trust me, it'll come back around again. Just be patient.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
It has been over ten years since Battlestar Galactica brought grimdark back. We're tired of waiting.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 06:18 pm (UTC)(link)
9/11 brought grimdark 'entertainment' to the forefront. I don't think we'll see a 'happier' future until terrorism is extinguished or we're all killed by all the nuclear powers setting the bombs off.

Media often reflects attitudes in the culture. There's a lot to feel bleak about right now and dystopian futures fit that.

A lot of media now have greedy dictators and corrupt leaders as the villains and a super consolidation of wealth in a few while the masses prospects dwindle further and further - all of which reflect common feelings about reality right now.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
At what time in history has there not been a lot to feel bleak about? Star Trek came out of the 1960s, when the Vietnam War was raging and the constant threat of nuclear annihilation was hanging over everyone's head. I'd say that they had just as much if not more to feel bleak about as we do now, and yet...

There's no pollyanna like Gene Roddenberry to make a 'bright' future.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
No as in you don't want happy, optimistic things?

I don't know. Isn't Guardians of the Galaxy pretty light? It has a villain, but most traditional forms of story do.

I like dystopias too, it's something different for me to watch/read, but I feel you. I miss my lighthearted sci-fi and I wish there was more of a mix of serious gritty sci-fi and fun sci-fi shenanigans.

I like dystopia, I don't want it to go away, but I definitely want a balance. Some more utopian fiction would be great. I truly enjoy both.

As the OP of the Edith Keeler secret a while back, I hear you, anon.

Yeah, I am sick to death of all this depressing stuff.

Like, with Walking Dead.

We get it! Humanity is ultimately doomed! Anytime you try to rebuild society in anyway it's going to end in failure! Wanting to do anything but survive day to day is bad!

How many times do we have to learn this stuff over and over before it gets old?!?

Like, dystopia's aren't supposed to be happy, but there has to be a little bit of hope, right? Otherwise why are we supposed to care?

IA there has been an overwhelming prevalence of grimdark SciFi (actually, not just SciFi but supernatural, fantasy and urban fantasy as well) and not much yay!humanity or space opera SciFi of late. I'm for more of a balance myself. And more space ships. There just aren't enough space ships lately. Although The Expanse looks promising as a hard SF premise. Belters! Mars versus Earth! Fun.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-27 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I'd also kill to have hard Sci-Fi snobs go away too. I'm hoping Star Wars brings the campy space operas back full force
