The problem is that FNAC now tends to sell more hipster gadgets than books per se...
Anyhow, it depends if you're speaking about bookstore chain, or individual bookstore. The Furet du Nord Lille is said to be 8 000 sq meters now, while the biggest FNAC, as far as I know, is the Bercy one in Paris that is 2 800 sq meters.

I guess that at the time the secret was made, yes, some people would go into panic attacks. I know people who would actively avoid turning on the news and going on websites with online news displays to escape the constant reminding that "we're at war and you could be next!!!"

I dunno, people have different reactions to crazy shit that happens, especially when it's local. I don't think you were being shallow or insensitive at all. It was probably more like you were releasing what you were holding it. It was going to happen sooner or later... the cancellation announcement just ended up being the release.
