I thought the show handled their relationship pretty well for a sitcom. The age thing was addressed, and I always found their breakup really heart-wrenching. I was, however, not down for the return of that big... TREERichard when she and Chandler were dating. It was unnecessary.

(it should probably be noted that I lovelovelove age-differences in my ships, so I might not be the right person to judge)

I thought it was well-done too. My ONLY issue was that Richard was a close family friend of the Gellar's, which added a creepier note to it. Even Rachel remembered him well from when she was little, so clearly he wasn't someone Monica only saw every so often, either. And I completely agree that bringing him back for teh dramaz was completely unnecessary. But other than that, I actually thought it was really well handled.

I do love Mondler, though. (I thought they were the best main couple in the show. Honestly, I felt like it was their story more than Rachel and Ross's, as individuals as well as being a couple.)

Same here. I was all aboard the Rachel/Ross train until the beach house episode. I *loved* all that business with the letter and the other friends locking themselves into Monica's bedroom during the final break-up, but after that I'd written them off. But Mondler always felt like a more viable relationship. Even before they got together, they had a great little friendship going on.

The beach house stuff just made no sense. Rachel sabotages Ross's happy relationship (with another friend of Phoebe's, no less, though the show seemed to forget that kind of thing), then makes him read a fourteen-page ultimatum saying he must assume all the blame for their previous breakup. WTF? I liked both characters as individuals, but their relationship made Ross look like a creepy "nice guy", and Rachel like a whiny narcissist when they were otherwise likable characters. Monica and Chandler always brought out the best in each other. And you're right, they really did have a lovely friendship prior to it; I was actually surprised to learn the show hadn't planned on keeping them together past a few episodes, because they always seemed to really understand each other.

I think what I liked about the beach house shenanigans was how sit-commy it all was. It said nothing positive about Ross and Rachel's relationship (which might be why I never cared about them as a couple after that), but I do remember finding Ross fake-whimpering and then shouting "FINE BY ME!!!" as he stormed out of the apartment really funny.

I agree with you, the beach episode just made me so mad

Their entire relationship just became super toxic and spiteful after that

I think they recovered from that eventually once they became actual friends again in season 5 but yes, their relationship did only bring out the worst in both of them for a good while there.

Thanks! You can never go wrong with a Moomin reference.
