yeah it was creepy as shit, and I'm not just saying that cause I love Monica and Chandler

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
But... Tom!!!

Actually, Friends. Who cares?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to both your sentiments.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it would've been less problematic if they hadn't made it clear the guy was a close friend of Monica's parents. Because there are women in their mid-twenties who date older guys. The show actually demonstrated why it might be a Bad Idea. But that she might as well have been his niece... yeah, icky.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't watched friends since I was a kid so in all seriousness, why would it be considered problematic?

I always liked them better then Monica and Chandler, oop.

I thought the show handled their relationship pretty well for a sitcom. The age thing was addressed, and I always found their breakup really heart-wrenching. I was, however, not down for the return of that big... TREERichard when she and Chandler were dating. It was unnecessary.

(it should probably be noted that I lovelovelove age-differences in my ships, so I might not be the right person to judge)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was well-done too. My ONLY issue was that Richard was a close family friend of the Gellar's, which added a creepier note to it. Even Rachel remembered him well from when she was little, so clearly he wasn't someone Monica only saw every so often, either. And I completely agree that bringing him back for teh dramaz was completely unnecessary. But other than that, I actually thought it was really well handled.

I do love Mondler, though. (I thought they were the best main couple in the show. Honestly, I felt like it was their story more than Rachel and Ross's, as individuals as well as being a couple.)

I remember liking their relationship, but I like age-gaps in ships so that never bothers me in fiction.

"You're the twinkie?!" That line always made me laugh.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought their relationship was creepy when I first saw the show, but I was actually pretty into it when I rewatched it years later. I think I acquired a thing for age gaps over the years, oops

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm typically all for age gaps in my fiction and in my real life (I'm 30 in case that makes a difference) but the fact Richard had been such a close friend of Monica's parents for so long does make it kind of weird even for me. In the end, I was glad she and Chandler were endgame.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought it was super-hot, whoops.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-11-30 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm of the opinion that every character on that show was a ginormous asshole, so I have to say I agree with you OP.

I tried to watch it, but I was put off every time by how distasteful they all were.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Stop it.

+1000

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
I thought they were a cute couple, and Tom Selleck was an amazing guest star throughout. The only misstep was when Monica and Richard's son tried to smooch after that arc ended.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Not as problematic and gross as Ross being a professor, dating a student, then Rachel (who is younger than Ross) dating said student's dad.
Ick. Very ick.
(Mostly ick for Ross being Ross. Ick.)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
No one would have bashed it as creepy and gross because the 90s weren't overrun by a bunch of self-righteous prudes.
