One of my favorite fanartists has quit their job. They now exclusively make fanart (plus a tiny bit of original art) and live on payments from this site. I find that so ridiculous.

Because they're making a living off primarily fanart?

Good for them, making a living doing what they love. Why do you think it's ridiculous? Are you against making money off fanart?

...I think that's awesome that they're actually able to support themselves that way. Most people aren't ever going to be that lucky.

Uh, good for them? Why is it ridiculous? I wish I earned enough from my writing to support myself.

good for them

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Why, because it's not a REAL job?

I hope you didn't mean for this to sound as petty and jealous as it sounds.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 09:31 am (UTC)(link)
Why? Good for them.

I hope they pay licensing fees on that professionally sold "fan" art then. Because as soon as they made it their primary income it stopped being a fan activity and started being their profession. They are ripping off the original creator otherwise. If they use paypal, then they better hope nobody uses Paypal's handy reporting tool to dob them in. They'll shut down the account and seize all the cash therein.

Keep in mind that copyright laws don't distinguish between people who make $2 off someone else's copyrighted material and people who make $2,000,000 off someone else's copyrighted material. You're just far more likely to get sued for it if you make a lot of money.

But fanart has traditionally been given a pass on that, where fanfiction isn't.
