The whole concept of Patreon is so weird to me.

Or, well, not the concept but how widespread its adoption has been.

Yeah, same. I mean, if it works for you, great! But it does seem like that's the ONLY thing a majority of the people I know who do creative work use nowadays, and I'm just waiting for the day the bottom falls out from so many people going that route. -_o maybe I'm just cynical.

I'm also still very iffy on the whole idea of paying for, especially subscribing to, someone doing fanart. Buuuut that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

I'm pretty sure there are still a lot of artists who will take commissions even outside of their Patreon. The majority of the ones I follow do.

And Patreon is one of those things where if you don't like it, then you don't have to support it. Art is a lot of hard work and Patreon is helping artists monetize their work (which is not always easy to do in a "will you do this for me for free?" society.) Just ignore it, maybe even do things like tumblr savior any key words like patreon, and then commission artists you know will take the work.

It sounds like OP's problem is not that Patreon exists, but that it's actively making it harder for them to commission fanart, which makes their complaint legitimate despite the "don't like, don't use" principle. I would not be surprised if plenty of artists did take commissions outside of Patreon subscribers, as you indicated, but I'd bet the really talented ones don't, because they probably have more commissions people want to ask them for than they have time to make. I agree though that that's their right.

I've never heard of this before. How well received has it been so far? How much wankier would it look if a site could limit fanfic access to monetary subscribers? I'm not devoted to the soapbox against it, but this seems like a whole other level of that unfairness.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Well it's not fanart only, it depends on who sets up the patreon but I've seen a lot of people use it to support their original comics or just their art as a whole.

Writers could do it in the same way I've seen people kickstart their novels.

A LOT of artists -- and other creators -- of all stripes use it. It's seen pretty widespread use.

It's not primarily a fandom thing. It's a way for artists to get patronage.

Lots of webcomic artists use it. I think the amateur game design crowd have latched onto it. Even Amanda Palmer uses it.

How exactly does the site work? You pay a certain amount every month to the artist to support them rather then pay for a specific work?

I can see how that might work out really well for them, but I find it odd that the artist wouldn't take commissions from whoever. (But maybe they're absolutely swamped and since they don't have a lot of time for commissions they decide to take them from the people who support them regularly first. If they ran out of commissions from those people, I imagine they would take anyone's.)

It is unfortunate for you or anyone else who wants to commission something (and maybe can't afford a monthly payment, or simply doesn't want to give one), but there's not much to do about it. (Except look for another artist that does things differently.)

(Anonymous) 2015-11-29 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Basically it's like buying a subscription to whatever work the artist chooses to make per month, for the people who subscribe.

Isn't that the site that is so infamous for scamming its members out of the money they make?

Or is that Paypal?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
You're thinking of PayPal, probably. It has a history of suddenly shutting down members' access to their own money.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not the site per se, but rather that a lot of patrons are actually bots set up by people who want to see things for free, so while the bot accounts say they're donating a certain amount to a Patreon, the creator's not actually getting the money.

At least that's what I remember from a Tumblr post a while back.

One of my favorite fanartists has quit their job. They now exclusively make fanart (plus a tiny bit of original art) and live on payments from this site. I find that so ridiculous.
nanslice: (Default)

[personal profile] nanslice 2015-11-30 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Because they're making a living off primarily fanart?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Good for them, making a living doing what they love. Why do you think it's ridiculous? Are you against making money off fanart?
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-11-30 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
...I think that's awesome that they're actually able to support themselves that way. Most people aren't ever going to be that lucky.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, good for them? Why is it ridiculous? I wish I earned enough from my writing to support myself.

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
good for them

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 07:45 am (UTC)(link)
Why, because it's not a REAL job?

(Anonymous) 2015-11-30 09:12 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you didn't mean for this to sound as petty and jealous as it sounds.

I feel like I'm the self-entitled kid sibling of this secret: "This artist I like used to post their work for free, and now they only post thumbnails outside their Patreon, BAWWWWWW."

Oh, well, me, grow up.

I love Patreon as a concept and there's definitely a few artists I'd support if I was financially able, but I hadn't heard of it being used by people who are primarily (or solely) fanartists. That seems a bit odd to me. Not sure why, as I've never had a problem with the idea of fanartists profiting from things like prints and doujins... maybe it's that I'm more a fanfic writer than artist and I hate the idea of sticking my fics behind a paywall.
