I can see how that might work out really well for them, but I find it odd that the artist wouldn't take commissions from whoever. (But maybe they're absolutely swamped and since they don't have a lot of time for commissions they decide to take them from the people who support them regularly first. If they ran out of commissions from those people, I imagine they would take anyone's.)
It is unfortunate for you or anyone else who wants to commission something (and maybe can't afford a monthly payment, or simply doesn't want to give one), but there's not much to do about it. (Except look for another artist that does things differently.)

It would kind of suck if you paid for the subscription because the artist did work in a specific fandom then the artist switched fandoms, but again, there's not much you can do about that. (Well, except stop paying.)

Yea, I'm not sure how you would stop that from happening, but I don't know that people would be so quick to do that with a smaller artist. (Versus something like a big name comic book.)
Though given the nature of the internet, I'm sure it's happened at some point.

On the other hand, I can see why if the artist did that some people might not care about subscribing (people that otherwise would, not people that never would because they don't want to or don't have the funds); they might just wait for the art to be made public. (That explains the extras, though!)

Most of the artists I follow who use Patreon have a Patreon-exclusive period, then release it into the wild and/or a main work and a Patreon-exclusive side-deal.
