Basically it's like buying a subscription to whatever work the artist chooses to make per month, for the people who subscribe.

Ah, and the art isn't viewable to anyone else? That's a bit different but I can see why it would be good business. (And I could see why someone would be interested, just as some people have subscriptions to certain comics.)

It would kind of suck if you paid for the subscription because the artist did work in a specific fandom then the artist switched fandoms, but again, there's not much you can do about that. (Well, except stop paying.)

Yeah, I think that's the idea. The artist probably can't stop a subscriber from sharing it if they really want to be a jerk about it, but the whole concept is that you're paying for an exclusive level of access.

Yea, I'm not sure how you would stop that from happening, but I don't know that people would be so quick to do that with a smaller artist. (Versus something like a big name comic book.)

Though given the nature of the internet, I'm sure it's happened at some point.

They often make the art viewable only to subscribers for a certain period of time, then make it public. Or post extras (sketches, comics, process vids) just for subscribers.

That's neat! (That even people who can't afford to subscribe still get to see the art.)

On the other hand, I can see why if the artist did that some people might not care about subscribing (people that otherwise would, not people that never would because they don't want to or don't have the funds); they might just wait for the art to be made public. (That explains the extras, though!)

Ah, and the art isn't viewable to anyone else?

Most of the artists I follow who use Patreon have a Patreon-exclusive period, then release it into the wild and/or a main work and a Patreon-exclusive side-deal.

Ahhhhhhhhhh. I think that's a pretty good thing to do for fans who can't afford to pay monthly.
