How long have you worked with this person, and how much daily/weekly contact do you have with him? Because based on your description of his behavior--pestering you to solve his problems for him instead of learning to do it himself, without regard for your time--I suspect that the longer you're exposed, the less likely you'll be to find him "a sweet kid."

It's classic passive-aggression, really--he probably feels put-upon at having to work at this job (or maybe at having to work at all) so he does a shit job and tries to get his colleagues to do his work for him.

He'll probably be exploiting that "sweet kid" persona when he's fifty.

If this person is a teenager, which I sort of assumed from the "sweet kid" line but maybe not? then it might not be a deliberate persona. He may just actually be really spacy and clueless.

You could be right; it's scary how everyone 10 years younger than you is still a kid when you hit 35 or so.

haha, I'm 25.

Though I can honestly say I have friends in their 30s, so maybe it depends on who you are.
