A revamped version would be fantastic. The writing/plot is great but the visuals/gameplay have not aged well.

Nah. They're just old.

---

That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing an update. Keep them isometric, but an engine and UI update is sorely needed. Something along the lines of Wasteland 2 or Shadowrun Returns, maybe.

Yeah, even that I'd be OK with. Just something that would make the damn games fun to play, rather than frustrating as hell.

I've been playing them for 15 years and I'll tell you right out, bring a guide. Per Jorner's got a couple good ones. His Wasteland 1 guide was a lifesaver.

I wish the frustrations I found were stuff that consulting a guide could help with. The awkward UI making combat, trading, and interacting with the environment harder than they needed to be, and a bug (that uninstalling and reinstalling wouldn't eliminate) removing the non-violent (read: "viable for the build I was trying to play") options for rescuing Tandi that I knew from consulting a walkthru were supposed to exist (and not even having the option of using console commands to work around the bug) - that stuff would remain a pain in the ass.

Can't really help you with the UI, as that takes some getting used to (FO1's is worse) but there's a number of fan patches for both games to fox bugs and generally improve the games.

Like, I'm not trying to push the game on you or anything, just saying. The TeamX patches even make FO1's companions much less of a pain in the ass.

No worries. You're a fan, I'm not, both are valid positions.

I've given it enough tries at this point to be pretty certain I won't find it fun, and, as a counterpart to this comment, I've been worrying about my explanation of my issues with it have come across as dumping on it.

(It took three tries to figure out a build that could get me to Shady Sands alive, alone.)

Yeah, I'm not sure you should be having that much trouble getting to the first town, as when I first played I'd had no experience with this type of game at all (wasn't allowed to play them 'cuz mom thought all RPGs were D&D and therefore works of Satan so I had to smuggle it in) and I got to Shady Sands okay. That was 15 years ago when I was a much shittier gamer. So either something's wrong, or you've had catastrophically bad luck.

If you give it another go, use the fan-patch. The standard is TeamX, but they're not cumulative so they require multiple manual installations, which can be a pain. FIXT consolidates them as well as adds further updates, but I found it to be a bit unstable.

Also turn down the difficulty, I guarantee you it'll make FO1 a cakewalk.

And really there's only one build you'll ever need unless you're trying to be fancy and do an all-melee run, but that's for crazy people.

I vaguely remember my brother mentioning the first Fallout game had the same engine as Baldur's Gate. I just looked it up - it isn't, but damn it looks similar in graphics to Infinity engine games.

The reason I mention this is because I have no problem playing Icewind Dale (sibling game to BG). Maybe that's because of nostalgic love, or maybe because I can get over old graphics for the sake of a good game (I did manage to play through FF7 too, and it has really old-looking graphics, even in 2005 when I played it).

they're not unplayable at all, i really enjoyed playing them, and they've held up a lot better than some other games from that time period. there is a mod that's going to be porting the F1 story over to F:NV's engine though.

I actually found out about that mod just a couple hours after making this secret.

I'd feel better if it were Bethesda and Obsidian doing it, though. For a variety of reasons, ranging from "I'd have a lot more confidence that they'd actually finish it" to "I'd really rather support the owners for something like this". But if the mod ever does finish, I'll take it.

that's true but... it's never going to happen. both devs seem happy to let modders do what they like, i doubt they'd ever do a revamp of a ancient game like that in the first place. the developer for the mod has been going for... 2 years now? i think if they were gonna lose steam they would've done it now.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 06:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I've followed too many fan-translation projects to find much confidence in that. (The number who've disappeared off the face of the earth after a couple years of steady work is ridiculous.) And even if they do see it through to the end, at this rate, I'm not so sure I'll be around to see it.

I'd argue that they are the only RPGs from their ere that aren't garbage, but that's just me.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
oooooh so much agreement
