And the penny drops

[personal profile] intrigueing 2015-11-30 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
After hearing to the commercial jingle several times a year for 15+ years, I only just now realized that "Every kiss begins with Kay" is a pun ("kay"/"k") and not just a plain old slogan.

Anything like this happen to you? Was it stupider or less stupid than mine?

I did the same thing with the same ad!! Like I did figure it out a while ago but for a long time I didn't.

I've had several similar experiences but none come to mind right now, at least not relating to well-known stuff like that...

Not only is it punny on the "kiss starts with K" front, it also works on the ad level of "get your girl some Kay jewelry and there'll be kisses (and more) in your future!"

It's a great slogan.

That's like literally what intrigueing said though?

That's actually not what intriguing said at all tho. They commented on the pun half the slogan. The only thing tbey said about the other half was that it was a slogan. They offered not one bit of expanded commentary on it.

I just don't know what you think they thought, if they didn't realize that the literal slogan was "buy jewelry, get kiss". Is there another meaning that I'm missing, pun aside?

Something like that happened to me with the Mattress Disounters slogan, "Have a good night's sleep on us." I don't even know if that ad's still around, but I got the jingle in my head randomly a short time ago and that was the first time I realized "on us" meant "courtesy of us" in addition to "on top of our mattresses."

I didn't realize that IHOP stood for International House of Pancakes until I was in my twenties. :( In my defense, my hometown didn't have an IHOP, so I'd never really seen one until I was almost twenty, and to this day I've never eaten in one.

has anybody ever actually seen a lot of people from different countries at an IHOP?
