Writing thread

How's it going?

For the first time since I started doing NaNoWriMo in 2007, I didn't finish. Oh well. It was going to happen sometime. I'm hoping I can finish this story by the end of the year.

I'm trying to figure out what I want to do with this thing though. It started as a mystery and led to some people who are studying magic and figure out that some of the old assumptions about it are wrong. Then I realized just how huge their discoveries are and all the ways people are going to try to use this information and now it's all spiraling out of control. I feel like one of my researcher characters who went from innocently going "isn't this fascinating?!" to "wait, what are you doing? I just wanted to know how it worked"

I have 4,600 words left to do before I go to bed tonight. T_T I have no idea if I'll make it.

And my story is titled Estelle's Very Terrible Journey which is a completely accurate assessment of the plot right now.

And it's always odd when a story changes the way yours did. It's like 'what did I do??? I didn't want this???' but sometimes it works out better? Sorry you didn't finish, though!

Good luck! I hope you make it but if you don't, 45,000 words in a month is still really cool.

I made it! 50,157 words with an hour to spare! \o/

I have 9,000 words to go. At this point, I'm just describing every single little thing in perfect detail to pad my word count. I wanted to give up, but then I wrote 8,000 words last night, so hopefully I'll win this month.

I'm at 9600 words of my Yuletide fic, and I'm SO close to the end. I'm writing the last scene tonight. I'm really hoping I can finish it after work tonight so I can keep to my plan of finishing before December.

(It still needs a ton of editing, but editing is easy.)

I hope you can finish it too. I know that feeling of being so close to the end. Thankfully momentum tends to carry me through fairly easily when I know I'm getting close. Except for a few times when I was stuck and took forever to do the last couple pages.

I didn't finish either, only got 25k in.

But I've been applying for my first ever job, so I'm not that upset about it.

Good luck with the job application!

I have yet to be hired for any job I applied for.

Different anon, but good luck to both of you! Filling out job applications can get so tedious.

I learned that NanoWriMo really isn't my thing and that for the past few years I've been trying to make myself, and it only sets me up for disappointment. I decided to quit making myself do it for now, maybe I'll be able to do it someday. but for now I'm just going to have fun with writing.

Which is what I'm doing now. And I like it much better without the pressure. I'm rebuilding an old idea newer and better than ever.

Also having fun in sidestuff just exploring characters interactions and slice of life type stuff.

It's great that you figured that out and are doing what works for you. I'm all about trying different things and seeing what makes writing most productive and enjoyable, and I find it really interesting to see how different everyone is in what works for them.

Pressure doesn't really work for me either but it's weird because I do like these kinds of challenges. It's just that I celebrate succeeding at them without worrying about it if I don't. It honestly doesn't bother me that I didn't finish this year. I'm happy with what I did produce and I'm pretty sure I'll be doing NaNo again next year.

I've been using Nanowrimo for planning my novel instead of writing it. I'm having tons of fun with worldbuilding.
