The box office takings were in the $212 million range, which sounds great except that the budget was $150 million. I know this still sounds like a bunch of money to you or I, but when it comes to big budget movies that's not a good enough profit to be considered a successful film. If it had been, there'd be sequels because that's how Hollywood is.

Worse than that: it's not actually a profit. That $212 million is the gross box office income, which then gets split between the production company and the movie theaters. For US movie theaters, the assumption is that the split is around 50-50; for foreign movie theaters, the production company typically gets less than 50%.

The production company actually made less than $100 million on a film that cost $150 million to produce. It lost money.

(On the other hand, the film did get very good reviews and those Oscar nominations, which is something of an alternate return on the production company's investment. But accolades aren't generally reason enough for Hollywood to throw away more money on a sequel.)
