(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 01:57 am (UTC)(link)The production budget was $150 million; the worldwide gross box office income was $212 million. Rule of thumb to determine whether a film is successful or not is to multiply the production budget by 2.5 and compare that amount to the box office income. In this instance, $212 million is a lot less than $375 million, which means the film was a financial flop.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-01 01:36 pm (UTC)(link)The production company actually made less than $100 million on a film that cost $150 million to produce. It lost money.
(On the other hand, the film did get very good reviews and those Oscar nominations, which is something of an alternate return on the production company's investment. But accolades aren't generally reason enough for Hollywood to throw away more money on a sequel.)
