That's not even a little bit logical. Do people claim it's not pedophilic to chip a child with an adult if the medium in question happens to be marketed towards adults? o_O

(Flynn/Rapunzel is a highly enjoyable ship IMO)

Yeah, this. I was going to suggest "partner" but you beat me to it.

I had a discussion about this with a friend of mine who said that this is a pretty important topic in some aro/ace circles. I still have no idea why "partner" can't be used, though. It's a pretty flexible term that doesn't come loaded with the baggage that the word "queer" carries. I guess if someone's asexual and not aromantic, they can always use older, literary terms like "Boston marriage" and "romantic friendship."

Idk, personally the term "queerplatonic" just rubs me the wrong way. I feel like there's nothing inherently queer about close friendships. Then again, I come from a culture where hugging, kisses on the cheek, being open, etc. are the norm among friendships of both sexes regardless of whether or not they're straight, so that could make me biased too.

Re: What do you consider cyberstalking?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-02 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Holy shit I'm sorry that's terrible.

I would consider following someone like a particular user and constantly complaining about them or bugging them to a kind of stalking.

I mean some people are saying it has to be PMig someone or going beyond public comments but I don't' agree.

If you're following around a user whenever they post you're still following them around. And that's still kinda stalkery.

World of Warcraft and the MCU...

Right I'd take Thor's powers and live in the WoW universe because fuck living in any Marvel setting, people in those don't get happy lives and at least in Azeroth I can carve out a chunk of land for me to live on as a crazy super-powered hermit. I'd be mostly okay so long as I didn't gain the attention of anyone too nasty. Oh actually maybe having Dr Strange's magic would be better since I could the stand up against the numerous WoW mages, but being nearly invulnerable(and Mjolnir) does has it's bonus points...

I'm sorry you feel that way; if you decide to leave I hope you find somewhere else better suited to your tastes.

I'm not entirely sure I agree that people misunderstand secrets on purpose, though. (Not the vast majority, anyway. There might be some trolls who think doing that can lead to fun wank, but that's probably it.) There are times I misunderstand secrets or comments, and I've seen plenty of people ask for clarification because they don't entirely understand what's being said. Not everyone jumps to conclusions or is an enormous green rage monster all the time.

However, yea, of course when you have a community like this where anyone can comment there's going to be hostility and disagreements at times. While I understand not wanting to see it (there are certain threads I avoid for that reason), there are also other things to look at and respond to. There are positive threads as well! And honestly, the best thing to do if you don't like what you're seeing is try to think of some secret and thread ideas yourself, though I acknowledge that isn't always easy, and you can never really tell if a secret or thread is going to 'take off' or not.

As for Cumberbatch, IDK what to say. I like to call him silly things too because I find it amusing (My favorite being Benadryl Cucumberbatch), but I never do it in a spiteful way; I genuinely like the guys acting and think he has an incredible voice. All the fuss over his appearance comes off as immature and rude to me sometimes, but it's just one of those things that happens in fandom; it probably won't stop anytime soon. (Here or elsewhere.)

Wow, that person is ridiculous.

The more radical thing to do than invent a new word that draws attention to themselves is to use partner/bf/gf and force people to challenge their assumptions about what those words mean.

Nah, I'm queer and from a culture where being physically affectionate with friends is definitely NOT the norm, and ia

Huh, I wasn't aware they were at Stanford at the same time! Nice catch, OP.

That sounds like a pretty damn cool crossover idea; I'd read it too!

Considering how freakin' awesome Red from Transistor's powers have the potential to be, I don't think poor Aperture Labs stands much of a chance.

I really don't understand what "queer" is doing in this word when it's supposed to be some kind of romantic friendship I guess? Where does gender come into it? Are people acting like close friendships between people of the same gender are radical? Or does queer have some new meaning that has nothing to do with gender that I'm unaware of?

A rewatch of Gundam Wing, and Sense8.

I'm either in the quasi-normal world, except I'm a Gundam pilot (sounds good!) or I'm a sensate in the Gundam Wing universe (so I'm basically Quatre, minus the Gundam).

Are two friends "heteroplatonic" if they're a man and a woman in this kind of relationship?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-02 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
Since when does "well articulated, and in agreement with what we saw in the novels" equal embarrassing?

Wasn't embarrassing to me. I really appreciate that she's remained engaged with the story and obviously still cares about it and wants to continue encouraging her fans (especially the younger fans) to think about and discuss some of the more salient conceptual aspects of her stories.

Is Gamergate still flailing along?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-02 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Snape was the only reason I read the books past "Goblet." It was pretty clear he was on some sort of redemptive arc, and I wanted to see how JKR could pull off him working for Dumbledore to defeat Voldemort and keep him a bitter, misanthropic arsehole. She did it.

It's because Snape - for very selfish reasons - still had the courage to carry through with what he had to do that makes him so interesting to me. He's a great contrast to Harry, who's able to set aside the differences he had with Snape and acknowledge that sacrifice. Yeah, some teachers are terrible people. Snape was one of those, but at the same time, he died to defeat Voldemort and that took a degree of courage, focus, and dedication to the goal that I find admirable.

Snape made the series interesting. He was a great antagonist. Some people prefer just to see things in black and white, I guess. Too bad for them.

I tend to think most people didn't think much of what Dumbledore said about Voldemort coming back because they didn't want to believe it, but I guess if anyone would avoid that kind of thinking I'd buy it being Snape (and people like Hagrid who took everything he said as gospel). But I still don't see where he's shown to be particularly worried about coming across as concerned with blood purity.

Bunch of bullies who would regularly would try to bully people into committing suicide.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-02 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
I hate Snape, and I thought it was a very nuanced comment. She wasn't excusing his actions at all. He did sacrifice himself to stop Voldemort. That is true. But she also says that he is not a nice person and did a lot of bad things, which most Snape fans don't seem to want to admit. And her idea of Harry naming his kid after him as an act of forgiveness actually makes sense to me in terms of Harry's character, even if it still seems dismissive of what Snape did to Neville and Hermione.
