Frisson! I am not much of a Star Trek fan either and I was like, ;_;

I don't know how this comic is connected to Roddenberry. Can someone fill me in?

He created (or was one of the creators) the original series.

Wait, here is the comic. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/plane

SA

;-; I just came back from reading and now I'm crying too.

Golly, I honestly had no idea that had happened and I thought I knew a bit about Roddenberry.

Thanks, both of you.

This one was so great. And I needed some Roddenberry love after listening to hipsters talk about how overrated and "not really all that progressive" he was (by today's standards, which WTF. Sorry he couldn't predict more of the future and give you a universe where nobody cared about the gender of their romantic/sexual partners). Or how awful he was because of infidelity issues.

It's crazy how it turns out that nobody, no matter how talented, is perfect.

Right? It's almost like they're human or something. Weird.

Oh, wow. I love The Oatmeal, but had never read this one. Powerful stuff.

(Also OP - you don't have to apologize for the things you like.)

I first saw this reposted on tumblr and was shocked to find it originated from something as crappy and tryhard as the Oatmeal.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
I find comments like this so weird because The Oatmeal has done a lot of comics that are more serious and profound. Usually still done in a funny way (or unfunny if you don't like his sense of humour), but this is hardly a weird first.

Sometimes people can surprise you but if you're this quick to judge, then you're going to miss out on a lot.

Your try-nothing is showing.

The Oatmeal's surprisingly good at this stuff

oh wow I just read this comic (the specific strip in the secret) for the first time last week and I've been thinking how interesting it was

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I know what you mean. It's an affecting story as told. And knowing that it happened to this particular person you sort of know about from other things makes a difference. Of course, I was a little bit of a Trekkie when I was younger, so that helps.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a huge Star Trek fan, but while I'm sure the crash happened, is there confirmation from anyone besides Roddenberry that things happened like this? Like, who was interviewed in that biography about this? Was it someone else that was in the crash? Because I'm not trying to stir anything up, but he was a notorious bullshit artist for basically all his adult life. Even his closest friends and contemporaries knew not to believe half the stories he told if they made him look good. And this has the same tone as a lot of his whoppers.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
There is confirmation from the surviving stewardess about him helping evacuate the burning plane and going for help. I don't know about the rest.

True story.

I read this comic in the middle of planned discontinuation syndrome resulting from going off my anti-anxiety medication (with the support of my psychiatrist). Basically, I was kind of dizzy and suddenly having ALL THE FEELINGS.

I got to the last panel, and I flat-out sobbed. Like ugly tumblr crying. Not because I was sad, but because it was an illustration of how there is so much good out there, in the world and in people.

Powerful stuff.
