Stopping Zocor

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Feeling-Way-Better-Than-I-Did-Last-Year!Anon, here.

I was prescribed Zocor earlier this year as a 3-months-let's-see-if-it-helps measure because of slightly elevated LDL ("bad" cholesterol). Since my insurance is changing next month, I won't be seeing the same doctors, and I may not be able to get an appointment before my script runs out. I tried to call my pharmacy, but nobody was answering the phone.

Does anybody here know if it's safe to stop Zocor cold turkey? At least until I can get re-evaluated by the new crop of doctors (which I plan to do ASAP)?

If "slightly elevated LDL" was all, I believe you can. Unless you're at risk otherwise - if you have diabetes or previous heart trouble. How much are you taking?

Blood sugar is smack in the middle of normal, and other than elevated LDL, I have slightly elevated BP (which...only seems to happen at the doc's office. At home it's a little higher than average but not alarming).

I'm on 10mg/day.

Please don't take medical advice about prescription drugs from the internet. Keep calling your pharmacy, or try another location, or get in touch with your current doctor's office.

Most of the conventional wisdom on stopping statin medications seems to be that it can be safely done "cold turkey", but that it is preferable to stop by tapering the dosage. For example: taking half a tablet for four days, 1/4 of a tablet for four days, and then 1/8 for four days before stopping completely.

Tapering is usually done to ameliorate serious withdrawal side effects, and though there aren't many that are currently associated with statin drugs, there can be situations where tapering is indicated in patients who are experiencing certain side effects such as short term memory loss.

Personally, I would ask your doctor about whether or not your current health concerns would make it necessary for you to taper your dosage, OP.

Pharmacy person here. You'll be fine. Stopping Zocor won't do any harm other than you know, your cholesterol going back up maybe.
