I don't get it either. I actually kinda find it a turnoff because it reminds me of how small I am relative to a lot of the world and how little I could do, empty-handed, to defend myself if someone bigger decided to pull something. I don't look at it as "aw he could totes protect me" either because the idea of being protected, rather than looking out for myself, is utterly loathsome to me as it makes me feel controlled and infantilized. The only exception for me is Captain America because Steve is just such a genuinely good and respectful person and he treats Natasha as an equal in combat in The Avengers.
