What is the appeal of big muscles?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
This is just something I don't get. It seems like being really muscular is supposed to be one of the main things that makes men attractive, but for me (a heterosexual woman), it's never made a guy more attractive. I know quite a few women who don't like huge bodybuilder types, but if someone is muscular but still "normal," it's almost assumed that he'll be universally attractive. And guys seem to think it's the only thing women are physically attracted to. Can someone who likes them explain what's so great about them?

I'm honestly not sure I can explain it because there isn't a real reason. I just find some level of muscle visually appealing on men (and sometimes women too). I don't personally like overly muscled guys. But Chris Hemsworth is my ideal male. That level of muscle is the most attractive thing to me. I particularly find muscular backs attractive (the assumption is that women like muscular arms best, but for me it is all about the back and the butt).

But attraction is entirely subjective and I don't expect everyone attracted to men to be attracted to the same thing.

Completely agreed on the backs.

I usually don't go for muscular types, either, but I'm guessing a couple reasons are because some women might like the strength and security they feel being in their arms, or it shows that since they work out, that means they take care of their bodies as a whole, and that can be attractive, too.

At least, that'd probably be what I would find appealing.

I generally don't go for super muscled guys myself. Physical fitness is nice, but enough musculature that suggests you spend hours in the gym and might talk my ear off about protein powders and kale smoothies... nah. I'm far more attracted to slender, androgynous men, but I'm married to a bear-like cuddly guy and I wouldn't trade him for anything.

eh, in my opinion it's much more a male power fantasy gettin' sold as What Ladies Like and then it happened for so long that a lot of ladies DID start buying into it

...but that said, I do find some muscular men pretty hot. Like you said, not crazy bodybuilder MUSCLES PACKED ON MUSCLES level, but normal-sized yet built in that kind of way where the lines of their body and the dips and shadows all just look strong, and smooth and powerful. I like that. I want to grab on to it. I find muscular women attractive as well!

Now, this is by no means saying those are the ONLY people I find attractive. Or that it's a necessary factor for me to want someone, because that's not even a little bit the case. But sometimes I do look at that and like it a lot.

Do people think women are so weak minded that they can't decide what they find attractive in someone? Like...one of the things hardest things to change is what you are attracted to.

Yes.

I don't get it either, but beauty's a subjective thing. My best friend likes body builder guys while I prefer chubbier ones.

I'm a lesbian and I find muscular women really hot. Can't explain why, I just do. Sometimes there's no rational reason for what appeals to people. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm a straight woman and I don't get it, either. I much prefer guys who are just more...average I guess? Not muscular or skinny or fat, just somewhere in the middle.

I don't get it either. I actually kinda find it a turnoff because it reminds me of how small I am relative to a lot of the world and how little I could do, empty-handed, to defend myself if someone bigger decided to pull something. I don't look at it as "aw he could totes protect me" either because the idea of being protected, rather than looking out for myself, is utterly loathsome to me as it makes me feel controlled and infantilized. The only exception for me is Captain America because Steve is just such a genuinely good and respectful person and he treats Natasha as an equal in combat in The Avengers.

Honest confession: muscles or muscly dudes (not body builders but muscled) have been so universal a feature when I hear straight women talk about their sexuality that I've started to have this instinctive disbelief of anyone who says otherwise

Re: What is the appeal of big muscles?

like... i've spent a lot of time in default-female spaces. I've seen a lot of flailing over deliciously muscled hunks of man-meat. I ain't never seen anyone freaking out like "OMG he's so chubby!" or "OMG he's so kind!!!"

And that's fine. Preferences are what they are. But it gets my goat a bit when people also want to pretend that they're so enlightened and really don't find hot the things that society considers hot.

Re: What is the appeal of big muscles?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
*shrug* Whatevs. I don't drool, but I acknowledge that Chris Hemsworth is considered a fine hunk of man-meat and I guess I sort of admire the dedication and self sacrifice it takes to achieve that body. But he doesn't do anything for me and given the choice between him and one of my (admittedly less muscled and fit) fandom crushes, it's no contest.

But FYI, when I like chubby dudes, it's not the weight I'm drooling over. It's them, total package. So it comes out more like, "OMG Kevin Smith is so freaking adorable and I would make out with him all day long!" and not "Ooh, check out his muffin top aw yeaaaaaaah..."

You can be skeptical all you want, but I think the issue is more complex than you realize.

It means the guy has access to plenty of protien, is healthy enough to routinely engage in activities that build muscle, and is physically strong. Therefore, he can provide for his offspring.

I don't know that this is the kind of thing easily explained...you either like it or you don't. Like, why do some people like blond hair over brown hair, or red hair over black? It's so subjective; I wouldn't even know how to begin describing it.

But then again I've been attracted to people with little muscle, and I've been attracted to people that are all muscle. (I'm thinking of Hemsworth and Evans as I type this.)

After a certain point I think I would be uninterested, but all in all it really depends on the person; there are a lot of in-shape actors out there with muscles that aren't super bulky. (Thinking of Hugh Dancy in Hannibal right now both because of #5 and because I've been on a Hannibal kick for quite a while now. So much of fandom acts like Hugh Dancy is a delicate flower but that guy is damn fit and has some nice, compact muscle.)

Re: What is the appeal of big muscles?

Exactly. Attraction is subjective and personal. Sometimes there may be conscious reasons, but I think most of the time we just like what we like. It isn't like I think muscles are innately more attractive anymore than I think blonde hair is innately more attractive. Those are just things that attract me.

And totally agree on Hemsworth and Evans. Those two are about the ideal in terms of what I like. Not much more than that, but also not a whole lot less.

Just visually, fun to look at the shapes all the muscles make. Plus fun to think about someone strong picking you up and throwing you around some.

Love muscles on my women too.

Everyone's attracted to different things, if you can't see it, then I can't explain it.

idk, I'm a gay dude so my perspective might be a little different. I'm generally not into hugely muscular guys, they have to have certain personality traits to make it work for me.

For me it's mostly an intellectual thing, I guess. I love the contrast of someone who's at the peak of masculinity (huge arms, deep voice, hair everywhere, total bear, comes across as cocky and self-absorbed like all gymrats), who's really warm and cuddly and sweet.

I'm a hetero gal and big muscular men have never been my thing. So don't feel bad!

Re: What is the appeal of big muscles?

Matthew Gray Gubler, preferably sans facial hair, is about the most physically attractive guy in the world to me, sooo...yeah, I don't really get the whole "muscular" thing either.

I mean, I'm not exactly turned off by some muscle. Chris Evans is pretty bulky, and he's still damn good looking. But if you pair physical bulk with an extremely masculine face, then I'm right out. That's why Chris Hemsworth is a nope for me. He and Chris Evans are probably similar in build, but there's something much more "macho" about Hemsworth that turns me right off. Objectively, Hemsworth is a hottie, but subjectively, ugh.

Ideally, though, I do like guys that are very lean - just shy of "skinny."

Tall though. They have to be tall.
