I tend to do a sort of thief/assassin style in Skyrim. I use a bow when I can, but then a short sword and dagger up close. Occasionally a shield if the enemies are too powerful. Always light armor.

I generally only use healing magic, and not very often, but alchemy is great for poisons!

I haven't played Oblivion, but I'm assuming most of the game mechanics are similar enough that this might be helpful.
