Elder Scrolls: Oblivion

(Anonymous) 2015-12-03 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I'm about to start Oblivion for the third time (I have a habit of dying before saving a lot of progress, getting discouraged at everything I've lost, then not playing for six months to a year, afterwhich I feel like I need a refresher on HOW to play).

But I can never decide what I want my character to specialize in regarding melee, ranged attacks and magic. I really only ever use magic when I can't win a fight any other way. But when it comes to ranged and melee...I like both. And I like to start with ranged, because if I can take people out or damage them from a distance before having to fight closeup, that's the route I'm going to take. But closeup fights are fun, too.

Nurgh, I don't know what to do!

I tend to do a sort of thief/assassin style in Skyrim. I use a bow when I can, but then a short sword and dagger up close. Occasionally a shield if the enemies are too powerful. Always light armor.

I generally only use healing magic, and not very often, but alchemy is great for poisons!

I haven't played Oblivion, but I'm assuming most of the game mechanics are similar enough that this might be helpful.

Oh man, I'm so bad at completing Bethesda games. SO FUCKING BAD. It takes me at least a year, and often way longer than that.

I never completed Oblivion. Enjoyed it and all that, but there's so much to do that I get overwhelmed and while I want to compulsively complete every quest I come across, doing so feels almost impossible; I grow bored of trying, get distracted by something else and then not come back for six to eight months. (And am a bit confused when I pick up the game where I left off.)

I've done the same thing with Skyrim; I only have two playthroughs but I've probably racked up about 400 hours in those now (and I haven't even made it mid-game, as far as story goes).

I'm not good with magic in Elder Scrolls games. It's awesome and I would like to specialize in it, but my first instinct is to hack and slash. I really enjoy sword and shield, and at least in Skyrim I LOVED archery.

You can do a bit of everything though, can't you?
