I don't think it's awful, but I would say you have to keep in mind the context and why the person wants to read YA.

A lot of people find "adult" fiction dry, boring and irrelevant to their current lives. It's kind of hard to find good reads if you're thirty and most fiction seems geared towards middle aged readers, OR if they're very dry reads and you like engaging characters and plotlines.


There's also different kinds of "smart." I have a friend who is very intelligent when it comes to math and science, but reading? Yeah. No.
