I feel a bit judgy about this as well. It's not that I think people aren't intelligent enough for adult fiction (because if that's true, then they're perfectly justified in reading YA!) but I think that a lot of adults who read exclusively YA are unambitious in their choice of books. Yes, YA is a great genre, it's more diverse and innovative than adult genres.

BUT THAT'S BECAUSE ALL THE READERS WHO SHOULD BE DEMANDING EXCITING ADULT FICTION ARE HAPPY TO SETTLE FOR YA INSTEAD.

How is it settling if it's being enjoyed? There's not a hierarchy of importance with fiction, contrary to what some would think. It's all preferences.

Settling doesn't mean you don't enjoy something at all, it just means you picked the low hanging fruit. I'm specifically addressing YA readers who insist they're only reading YA because adult fiction isn't interesting or creative enough to suit them.
