People have talked about it. Sorry you're about a year too late.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, really? I mean, I definitely get hate-fucking, but...

I still think this song is crying out to be part of a fanmix for some the abo trope. So, actually, maybe I do see where you're coming from.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I always figured it was a metaphor about two people who can't stand each other but also want to fuck each other and can't stay away from each other? On both sides? She's the one "taking [him] down, rolling on the ground"... am I the only one that interpreted it this way?

[personal profile] diet_poison 2015-12-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
that would be my interpretation of it if I actually stopped to think about it

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
That would seem to be what the lyrics are saying

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 02:44 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly. I see it as being similar to "I Hate Everything About You" by Three Days Grace. And being animalistic =/= rape. It just means raw. Primal. Which can actually be pretty hot.

lol well guess what's stuck in my head now

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Still a good song that I need for all them fucked up shippy fanvids.
elaminator: (Hannibal: Hannibal/Will)

[personal profile] elaminator 2015-12-05 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Yea, there's a fantastic Hannibal/Will vid set to this song and I thought it was very fitting for how screwed up that relationship is.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-04 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
It reads as a song about hatesex to me
I can see fandom vidders going nuts over it. The lyrics are v. hot and evocative.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was the point of the music? It's not treated as a good thing, and even the MV ramped up the fucked up-ness of that song, with the guy stalking and having unhealthy sexual fantasies of the girl and all. I think it's pretty deliberate. Still doesn't excuse the song for being rape-y, but they acknowledge it, I think.

But yeah, agreeing with above; that you're late a year for this drama, OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Why do you expect decorum and taste in pop music?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
So when did hatesex become an ok thing? Why are people defending this as 'just hatesex'? do we really live in a world where people can't see how rapey the idea of hate sex is?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
Explain it for us.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
Hatesex has been a fandom kink since the year dot. It's not 'rapey' if two people who otherwise can't stand each other are sexually attracted. (Or can be viewed as sexually attracted to one another.)

Mine was it's about rough sex.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
i think there's a reason he's playing a serial killer in the music video

Never heard of the song but those are some creepy lyrics

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Personally, I've considered Adam Levine kind of creepy since hearing Harder to Breathe off their first album.

Animals definitely is kind of rapey, but I think it's somewhat mitigated by the fact that the entire song comes across as a metaphor. Whereas Harder to Breathe is somewhat less overt, but Levine also doesn't have the excuse of it being metaphorical when he sings-

How dare you say that my behavior is unacceptable
So condescending unnecessarily critical
I have the tendency of getting very physical
So watch your step 'cause if I do you'll need a miracle

That last line is like, the fuck? To this day I honestly can't tell if he's threatening to beat her or fuck her. I'm assuming the latter, but that's...not actually any better? I mean, using sex as a threat is all kinds of fucked up sooo.

Oh, and lets not forget that this is the same song where he tells the woman he apparently wants to fuck that she's--

Not fit to fucking tread the ground that I'm walking on

I'm not saying Harder to Breath isn't catchy as fuck, because it is. And so is Animals (though IMO it's less catchy and less artistically solid as well). Hell, most of Maroon 5's music is extremely catchy and enjoyable to listen to, if you don't think about the squicky bits. But one also gets the impression that Adam Levine is an egotistical, narcissistic, self-entitled prick, with some serious issues with women. At least that's the impression I get.

Only, it isn't?

The song clearly does talk of an unhealthy sexual relationship, but several verses imply it's reciprocal, so...no.

Not every fucked-up sexual dynamic is actually rape.

This is so pearl-clutchy that I can't even believe it's a real secret.

If you want taste and decorum, go to the fucking opera, yeah?

Yes I agree. This song is creepy.

There's another Maroon 5 song that feels a bit rapey too (One More Night) that I feel major league uncomfortable whenever I listen to even a second of it.
