I'm not as much put off by elements in the story as I am by attitudes of the author.

The biggest thing that puts me off is when the author makes a habit of putting what they wish the canon/characters were over what they are.

I'm not saying it's bad to write what you wish happened but when you're making a character act stupid or mean because of how you feel about them and ignoring their canon personality then that's a huge turnoff.

See: "NCIS" fandom. Classic example of this. I'm not even a regular viewer of that show, but I've read some of the fic for it and holy crap, the way some writers (especially Tony fans) treat Tim/Ziva/Kate in some of their stories...

It wasn't just in stories. Tony fans also did it in discussions of the show. ("How dare Tim make a negative comment to Tony after he pranked him for the millionth time!" "How dare Ziva be a meanie to precious Tony!") And it is why after being hugely involved in fandom for years, I ended up leaving. It just got so bad. And I'm still bitter about it because NCIS fandom was such a big part of my fandom life for so long.

Oh dear god, this is why I hardly read fic in the Undertale fandom anymore. It's almost always turning Asgore into some irredeemable asshole. What few fics don't make him out to be "I'M GOING TO KILL EVERYONE I DON'T CARE ABOUT GETTING MY PEOPLE OUT OF THE UNDERGROUND" are the very few I've actually read and reviewed.

I agree with this when they're deliberately making the worst of a character.

But if someone is merely embracing fanon - writing a character as more vulnerable, or conflicted, or more of a badass than they actually are in canon, or what have you - that I just consider the status quo in fandom. I mean it's pretty much just how fandom operates.
