Wouldn't it be funny if Vaccines are ever proved to cause autism? There is a possible future out there where Jenny McCarthy is lauded as a hero, a saviour of children and a genius. How horrible is that to contemplate?

Ugh I hope not.

Then again I hope in the future that people stop trying to prevent every autistic person and acting like our lives are painful and so awful we might as well not even live because it would be ~cruel~ to let us suffer.

Help the severe people and those who suffer. Use that shiny medical science to fix everything that makes them incapable of living independently and communicating. Focus on making the condition livable for the severe and those who suffer rather than erasing everyone of them because some of them have it bad.

But what if by the time it's proven, autism is considered by and large less horrible than being unvaccinated against deadly diseases?

I think a few mass outbreaks of polio or pertussis would cure society of any such notion very quickly.

There's been already a few outbreaks of pertussis and it still hasn't changed anti - vaxxers' minds.

Nah man, I'm talking MASS outbreaks. Epidemics. Huge scares. People dying in significant numbers.

There will always be anti-vaxxers and other people with fringe anti-science stances, but if anti-vax does become a widely accepted notion, some major outbreaks will change that.

That's never going to happen unless some anti-vaxxer manages to invent something that allows them to perform mass mind control, because there's absolutely no factual backing for the idea that vaccines cause autism.

And even if there was, there's no way we as a society would decide that an infinitessimal chance that a child might develop autism is somehow worse than the much, much larger chance that said child might die or suffer irreparable harm from a wholly preventable illness.

My parents were anti-vaxers and all my school records have a big EXEMPT where my immunization records should've been. Guess who's autistic anyway? (Hint: it's me.) So in this hypothetical Jenny McCarthy-worshipping future, presumably the records of people like me were wiped out somehow. Also people who'd rather have a dead kid than an autistic one creep me out. My parents didn't do the no-vaccines thing because they feared autism, since I was born well before the fake Lancet Wakefield study, but because another child in the tiny town they lived in died of a bad reaction to the DTaP vaccine (or maybe just appeared to and died of something else) shortly before I was born.
