I always felt bad for Asgore, even on my first playthrough. The way the other characters (aside from Toriel) spoke about him made him sound like the nicest guy, and when you do meet him, he IS a nice guy. His reaction to you indicates he didn't want to kill you in the first place, but he felt it was his job as the king. Hell, he'd rather just sit with you and have a cup of tea, but he knows he can't do that since his people depend on him and are wanting him to free them all. He reluctantly fights you. The reason Toriel is mad at him is because, long story short, he was too scared to just go up to the surface and take the souls. He'd rather just wait for them to come to him, because he doesn't WANT to hurt anyone, and he asks Alphys to research souls so he can find an alternate way to get to the surface. He's a majorly misunderstood character. It really pains me to know that he and his wife had such a cute, nice relationship that was ruined because of his cowardice.

I actually wanted him to be able to free the monsters, so on my first playthrough I intentionally threw the fight so he'd kill me. I thought that was the right thing to do, but apparently as the protagonist I'm supposed to get my way, not Asgore and the monsters. :T
