lol yet another secret that makes me glad I'm not part of the Undertale fandom.

I also thought it was pretty obvious that Asgore was supposed to be sympathetic (and was, absolutely, if you bothered to read all the dialogue and talk to the NPCs).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
meh, i'd say the fandom is pretty alright. of course you'll see the bad side only if all you look at is F!S.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
Yeaaaaaaaah no. I've seen it from Undertale fans the internet over. Like literally the only fans who haven't dunked dumped on Asgore that I've seen have been part of my group of friends.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
Really? Because almost everyone I know likes Asgore and all the "dunking" on him is obviously just jokes and not meant to be taken seriously.

It's almost like fandom is really diverse and doesn't always operate on a hivemind or something!!

(DA)

relax, anon.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with this secret, especially the bit about Toriel:

If she really cared that much about all the kids, why did she wait until this kid to do anything about it (in a true pacifist run)? Why didn't she stop him earlier if she actually gave a shit?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:03 am (UTC)(link)
Idk I wouldn't call Asgore evil. He did bad things but if anything, Asgore came off too stupid, in a creepy way, to realize what he was doing. Like a child who thinks he's helping goldfish by freeing them from the tank.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Huh, that's an interpretation I hadn't heard before. Can I ask what made you think that?

Personally, I thought Toriel was being, maybe not stupid, but definitely foolish/a little naive, though maybe that was grief? With her thinking that it would have been such a great idea for Asgore to take the human soul, cross through the barrier, then kill seven people to free the monsters.

Because that wouldn't have started a war, or anything.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Him asking Alphys to do the experiments on the monsters. I can see him asking that with childlike innocence fully believing it'll work and won't hurt anyone and it'll be good for everyone in the end and so it'll all be rainbows eventually.

Agreed about Toriel. An adult her age with experience of being a queen should know this shit. Everyone was a little bit stupid in many unexpected ways, honestly. It threw me out of the game a lot.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I didn't think he asked that out of foolishness, but rather out of "what haven't we tried? Let's try that next" and grief, but I can see how you got to that conclusion.

I think the main issue is that Asgore and Toriel got mired in grief, and acted in ways that weren't super great, which was why it didn't bug me as much? But I can see why it would bug you, if that's how you interpreted it. (Not sarcasm).

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I would buy that the foolishness was delusion or denial brought on by grief.

I would buy the grief reason overall for everyone, if the game had started after the first or second child.

Continuing the whole thing six different times... nah

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I figured that, for Asgore, he kept doing it because his people were looking to him, and had hope for the first time in a really long time. Though, Toriel still just bugs me. Maybe it's because the NPC called her "Mom" (and flirted with her, lol).

(Unless you meant the experiments? But I don't think that those happened once after each child).

I do wonder how their lifespans fit into it. After all, it's implied that Toriel and Asgore are going to live basically forever, and have already been living a very long time, since they're boss monsters, and no longer have a child to give energy to. If you live that long, maybe the years it took for the first six children to show up were just a blip on the radar?

i read something interesting about this once - can't find it now. but, basically, it said that to monsters, science is a bit like magic to us. that's why asgore believed in it so much. it explained it much smarter than i did, of course haha. i think it was a pretty cool interpretation, giving more sense to asgore's behaviour.

Re: DA

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Determination was like mysterious human magic to them, so that's similar to how I interpreted it.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
i feel you, OP. i really pitied asgore during the course of the game; it's very clear he made his decision while he was consumed with pain and grief, and after seeing just how much hope it brought his kingdom, couldn't take it back. it doesn't change the fact what he did was wrong, but i feel like all those people branding him an unrepentant child murderer that you shouldn't show in a happy situation ever are acting ridiculous. they blame asgore for what he did and how he can't move on, but they're quick to ignore the fact toriel chose to leave grieving asgore alone with the horribly difficult situation in his kingdom - of course it's easier to move on when you aren't put on a spot like this and expected to hold true to something you said after your life just crumbled to pieces in one moment.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. Toriel is not perfect. Her choice of having the monsters stay underground also causes suffering.

Asgore is very personable guy who likes gardening. Like I said on the last Undertale secret, the reason I don't ship them is Toriel's clear disgust with him. All about her reaction to Asgore. Not Asgore as a character.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
I always felt bad for Asgore, even on my first playthrough. The way the other characters (aside from Toriel) spoke about him made him sound like the nicest guy, and when you do meet him, he IS a nice guy. His reaction to you indicates he didn't want to kill you in the first place, but he felt it was his job as the king. Hell, he'd rather just sit with you and have a cup of tea, but he knows he can't do that since his people depend on him and are wanting him to free them all. He reluctantly fights you. The reason Toriel is mad at him is because, long story short, he was too scared to just go up to the surface and take the souls. He'd rather just wait for them to come to him, because he doesn't WANT to hurt anyone, and he asks Alphys to research souls so he can find an alternate way to get to the surface. He's a majorly misunderstood character. It really pains me to know that he and his wife had such a cute, nice relationship that was ruined because of his cowardice.

I actually wanted him to be able to free the monsters, so on my first playthrough I intentionally threw the fight so he'd kill me. I thought that was the right thing to do, but apparently as the protagonist I'm supposed to get my way, not Asgore and the monsters. :T

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
I still kinda find the "Asgores the buttmonkey of the group" jokes funny, lol sorry OP.

I don't think he's an intentionally bad person or anything, (he's a lawful evil type of character imo)but for some reason I just have a hard time liking him as much as the other characters.
Toriel as her flaws and all, but lmao she's made way less mistakes and killed way less people than Asgore, let's not pretend they're on the same level here.

Also, every soriel shipper I've seen bag on Asgore always did in a jokey tongue-in-cheek way.
Maybe you should just learn to lighten up a bit OP.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 02:20 pm (UTC)(link)
anon did you inhale too much laughing gas before writing this?

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Now I've had it

WHO
WHICH SORIEL SHIPPER HATES ASGORE SO SO MUCH

Because the worst thing I've ever seen in the ship tag was a couple of fanarts with him being sad while looking at Toriel and Sans.
On the other hand, the tag is always chokefull of people whining and crying and accusing soriel shipper of being oh so mean to him.
It's almost as if they are making things up just to shit on a couple they don't like :))))))

(Of course I have no doubt that in the private of their own blog, untagged -because seriously, never seen a single istance of Asgore bashing in the tag. Never.-, there's people shitting on him. Still doesn't justify all the fuckwits that clogs up the tag with their not-requested whining. Fuck off, tbh :)))

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ahahaha it's so painfully obvious that this is the same anon as one message above.

Chill the fuck out, seriously. OP's secret isn't half as annoying as this pathetic whining you're doing.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 04:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, this isn't me.
This persons writing isn't even in the same style of my writing.
Stop getting so obsessed with me you werido loser.

(Anonymous) 2015-12-05 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Fandom loves to trash him while super woobifying Flowey/Asriel and Chara.

Moral: if you want your character to do super fucked up shit but still have the fanbase coddle them and Defend At All Costs, make them a child instead of an adult.
